The Scions of the Realm

It was five siblings that betrayed and murders Lightsinger, the peaceful incarnation of an ashborn dragon. They slew the dragon and stole away its essence, using it to make themselves demigods and the rulers of the Realm.  They thought they had taken all of Lightsinger, but a fraction was missed.  And over the decades it burned with hatred, eventually Doomwing was born from Lightsinger's ashes and now reaps his revenge.


The Scions of the Realm are (from left to right) Black Smoke, Red Iron, Golden Vapour, Blue Ghost and Green Aspect, and they rule over various elements of the Realm.  Industry, Conquest, Wealth, Politics and the esoteric.  Doomwing seek to reclaim his essences from these thieves, and reap fiery vengeance.

Art Studies: 001

The art is a bit challenging, I feel like I can draw the fire I like, but Doomwing, well I'm struggling there. It's not just form, proportions and perspective, but how to light him. I want Doomwing to be something of a silhouette, but more substantial. His scales are so dark they all but devour any light that touches them, but still reflect enough to show shape. I don't know, perhaps I'm over thing it.

The fire was fun to come up with, I'm using a palette extracted from a picture of lava. And that's the look I'm aim for, almost like Doomwing spews liquid hot lava rather than fire. I'm even toying with the idea that Doomwing doesn't simply regurgitate the armour of the knights he devours, but separates them into a specialized organ that melts and it down and stores in in a molten state to be spewed onto his enemies. There are problems with this idea (especially in terms of believability) , naturally, but many opportunities. If nothing else, it will look metal as hell \M/

Knights of the Realm

Some prototype artwork for some of the more common villains/lunch encountered by Doomwing. To the common folk the Knights of the Realm are heroic bastions of all that is good and worthy, often facing impossible odds and braving mortal danger, all the name of honour and the Realm.


To Doomwing they're an annoyance at worse, a light snack at best.  Occasionally a Captain of Arms will pose something of the threat, but usually a few charred bodies and swallowed comrades is enough to send the puny metal coated humans fleeing.

Animation Study: Bat wings

Working on Doomwing's flight animations, starting with a bats.  It's rough as hell, but I've never animated wings before, so it'll be an experience.
This is a first attempt, I'm hoping to better next time.  I envision Doomwing's flight motion to be somewhere between a bat and large vulture.

It has began

This blog is designed to follow my wild and probably taxing journey to get a game from inception to launch.  I've a little knowledge, a little talent, pinch of ambition and a bucket load of anxiety.  The latter being something I could do without.  In a way, it's my crippling fear of the future, the memory of the past and my own short comings that inspired this project.  Not my first, but definitely the first to be completed (not fingers cross, by hell or high water.).

Doomwing, a simple enough concept.  You play a dragon, avenging yourself against the puny humans that managed to slay your father and stole away your magical birth right.  You will devour knights, raze cities and generally punish humanity for their blasphemy.

Become the Aspect of Death, Doomwing.
